What appears as a mundane high school, full of hierarchy and angsty teenagers, quickly spirals into a much deeper and darker story. We see Veronica Sawyer, a victim of bullying, attempt to conquer the borderline impossible task of becoming a Heather; a Heather being the super-human, untouchable trio within the school.
Somehow succeeding against all the odds, Veronica finds herself joining the Heathers to rule and become one unstoppable force, however things soon take an unexpected turn. As we see the introduction of a mysterious character that goes by the name of J.D, we are spritely charmed by his presence, intelligence, and individuality, but what is he hiding?
With insightful and often comical diary entries throughout each scene, the viewer is treated to quick quips and jests to keep you hanging onto their every word. A tale of self-love, appreciation, power and control, Heathers is a tease for what unravels. First produced in 2018, Heathers the musical bursts with memorable melodies, electrifying choreography, and emotive writing, capturing the true essence of musical theatre.
Realising that some have much darker secrets than others, Veronica is tasked with making life-altering decisions, but who can she trust?
With the school being hit with one tragedy after another, we see the once defiant Heathers disappear and fall, whilst Veronica plummets to an inescapable low. As the truth begins to overspill, friendships start to prevail, and clarity is finally grasped, the future of Westerberg high school and the students that walk its halls can be saved by one act of bravery and courage, but is it too late?
With underlying notations and meaningful takeaways, a musical that will have you laughing and crying, Heathers is certainly not one to miss.
